Plant Sales & Garden Shows
Master Gardener Plant Sales
- Spring Garden Market: Our biggest plant sale is held in early April at History San Jose in Kelly Park, San Jose. Plant sales start at 9 a.m. and the vendor fair and seminars take place through the afternoon. Save the date for 2010 – April 10!
We offer hard-to-find heirloom tomato varieties and many different types of chiles and peppers that we start from seed in January – along with other interesting vegetable, herb and ornamental plants – more than 16,000 plants all told. Dozens of vendors offer more plants for sale along with gardening supplies of all sort, and throughout the day you can attend 15- or 30-minute talks on growing vegetables, preparing soils, and more. Master Gardeners at our Q&A table are on hand all day to answer any of your gardening questions.
- Palo Alto Plant Sale: Held one week later in April at our Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, this event is a subset of the Spring Garden Market. In addition to the plant sale, you can attend short gardening talks and talk with Master Gardeners at our Q&A tables. Plants from the Spring Garden Market are set aside for the Palo Alto sale but not all varieties are available. You can also tour the vegetable gardens and waterwise gardens after you find your plants.
- Fall Plant Sale: Each fall the Master Gardeners hold a Cool Season Vegetable Plant Sale at the Prusch Farm Park Harvest Festival. Enjoy fresh, home-grown vegetables year-round – our Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing cole crops like broccoli and cabbage, greens like lettuce, spinach and argula, root crops like carrots and beets, and much more. In addition to the plant sale, we host three other booths: Children’s Activities, a “Brag Table” showcasing produce, flowers and more, and a Q&A table.
Garden Shows and Exhibitions
- Going Native Garden Tour: The master gardeners are one of the sponsors of this annual spring tour of waterwise and native plants gardens. The tour is free and dozens of Bay Area gardens are on the tour. Most of the gardens are in private homes and the owners are on hand to answer questions. The Palo Alto Master Gardener Demonstration Garden is on the tour and Master Gardeners are on hand as docents to give tours and answer questions. There are usually one or more gardens where plants can be purchased.
- Spring in Guadalupe Gardens: Warm Season Vegetable plants are on sale and Master Gardeners host a Q&A table. This celebration of the out-of-doors takes place at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens in San Jose as well as at the park’s Heritage Rose Garden – at the peak of its bloom with spectacular color and fragrance in the garden of more than 3,000 varieties of heritage, modern and miniature roses. Entertainment and hands-on activities for all ages are featured throughout the day including sales of unusual plants, workshops and lectures, fun kids activities, and solar power exhibits.
- Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto holds two annual
garden tours and plant sales. The
Spring Garden Celebration and Fall Community Day both include tours of the
gardens and special displays, horticultural resources at dozens of booths and
plant sales with many plants propagated from specimens in the gardens. The Master Gardeners host a Q&A
table.
