Master Gardener Lee Ann Ray will talk about site preparation,
selecting varieties, and the cultivation and harvesting of
blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and
mulberries.  Lee Ann will also touch on the topic of preserving
your harvested berries.

reduced chemical and pesticide use, improved habitat,
and the unique aesthetic appeal of gardens designed with

You can grow most varieties of citrus in this area successfully,
so come learn the best varieties of mandarins, oranges,
lemons and limes; less common citrus such as citron and kumquats;
and citrus used just for marmalades and drinks such as
Bouquet de Fleurs and Calamondin.  Would you like to be able
to harvest citrus year-round?  Learn about size control through
the various dwarfing rootstocks that are used in building the trees we
can buy.   Nancy Garrison has been growing citrus at her home in
Willow Glen (San Jose) for 27 years and at the International Rare Fruit
Orchard at Prusch Farm Park in San Jose for 25 years.  Nancy's
presentation includes many photographs of  the wonderful varieties
she recommends  for our area.  She will have some fruit for tasting,
depending on what  is available at this time of year.

the Peninsula and South Bay, and trellising techniques for
raspberries.

Begin spring cleaning early this year and attend a unique workshop
on recycling art for the garden.  Start with an introduction to using
"junk" materials and see a presentation of how others have turned
their trash into timeless treasures.  Then use your own creativity
to make something for your garden that will impress your neighbors
and encourage great green practices.  Some materials will be provided,
but we would love for you to clean our your closets and garages -
one person's junk is another's treasure!  Give new life to
landfill-destined  items and have fun this year with your spring cleaning.

Description: Our mild Mediterranean climate allows us to grow
a dazzling variety of temperate and subtropical fruits and berries. 
Learn how to harvest  delicious fruit from your garden every month
of the year.  This course will stress how sustainable gardening
practices such as efficient watering methods, integrated pest
management and use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments
apply to growing fruits and berries.  Pome fruits (apples and pears),
stone fruits (apricots, peaches, nectarines plums, pluots and cherries),
citrus and other subtropicals will be covered, as well as blueberries,
raspberries, strawberries and other berries.  Topics include:
preparing soil; planting (including space-saving techniques) and
establishing plants in the first year; irrigation methods and
systems;  cultural requirements of specific fruits and berries;
recommended varieties of deciduous fruits, citrus, avocados
